Designed by industry professionals for industry professionals, the North Carolina Center for Automotive Research (NCCAR) facilities are being constructed in phases which have been defined or organized based on customer demand. Phase 1A construction began in September 2008 and client visits began in November 2009. The secure features available in Phase 1A include:

• 2.03 mile ride and handling course with a 0.5 mile straight (flat), 15 feet of elevation change and 100' runout buffers. The course is 40 feet wide to provide for lane-change maneuvers, and to allow the use of cones and variations to corner geometry. The course may be traveled in either direction.
• Integrated vehicle dynamics area (VDA) of 670 feet by 128 feet (approximately 2 acres).
• Six private garages (28' x 32') with vehicle lift, office for 6, kitchen, full bathroom, storage and support areas.
• Private engineering suites flex-designed with individual offices and bullpen accomodations.
• Customized rental and/or lease arrangements to facilitate use of all NCCAR facilities individually or in combination.
• Two large conference rooms

NCCAR will continue to add features based on funding and user demand. The complete Site Master-Plan, that is, construction beyond Phase 1A will include the following:

• Completion of the ride and handling course - additional 2.55 miles of demanding road systems with 30 feet of elevation change and two turning circles.
• Extended VDA (integrated with the R&H course) – total size will be 670 feet by 670 feet (approximately 9.2 acres).
• Second, and larger, VDA with acceleration roads for peripheral and central approach. The VDA is approximately 2,400 feet in length by 830 feet wide (approximately 37 acres).
• New Operations and Engineering building with client leasable offices and garages.
• Climatic chamber with full vehicle performance and emissions (individual wheel control).
• Engine combustion laboratory.
